Choosing an English test starts with the requirements of your chosen course and visa route. Check the accepted test version, minimum overall score and any individual skill requirements before paying a booking fee.
Compare the test experience
IELTS speaking involves a trained examiner. PTE Academic is computer-based and uses recorded speaking responses. Review the available IELTS delivery options at your test centre and try sample tasks from both providers.
Think about your comfort with typing, using a microphone, responding to an examiner and working under timed conditions. Practice results and feedback are more useful than assuming one test will be easier.
Confirm the correct test version
An institution's English requirements and a visa route's requirements may differ. Pearson offers different tests for different purposes, including PTE Academic, PTE Academic UKVI and PTE Core. Ask for the exact requirement in writing if it is unclear.
Plan your preparation
Begin with a skills assessment, then set a realistic schedule for listening, reading, writing and speaking. Use mock tests to identify recurring errors and leave enough time for results before your application deadline.
Check current fees, available dates and result information with the test provider when booking.
